My last post was 2/7/2018 over almost two weeks ago. I went ghost with posting and writing. Sometimes with your craft and work, its the best thing you can do. What I have been up to during that time?
Several things actually. Studying subject matter and ingesting just about everything I can get my hands on. Deep work. Sort of like working a thesis or masters (which I have not earned by the way) where you go super deep on a single subject. This subject happened to be me.
At times, at least twice a year, I walk away from my favorite work. Why? Some of those reasons are:
- To gain perspective, is this my best work and the work I want to continue?
- Become a subject matter expert in a topic or two that I am curious about.
- Just to take a break from the art.
- To build resilience and bolster perseverance.
- To define/redefine success for myself.
There will be days that you just don’t want to do it any more, whatever you it is that you love. When that feeling creeps into your mind, its time to take a break and come back to it. Re-explore why you do it in the first place.
If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am doing today? – Steve Jobs
The below link to a YouTube video from my friends at MotivationalGrid put together, is a great reflectional video that explains my feelings. I’ve shared it before. Its a dramatic look inside as you listen to it, but its necessary.
The take away for me usually afterwards? Well, here I am. Are you doing and at where you would want to be? If not, stop, go deep inside, and get real with yourself. Prioritize who you are. Become less impressed with yourself and more involved with where you want to be. What’s your hill?
Its good to be back.
🙏🏻 Shawn
