In my focus on the theme of resilience this month I was struck by an incredible quote that landed in my Messages app.
“To much consistency is as bad for the mind as it is for the body. Consistency is contrary to nature, contrary to life.” – Aldous Huxley
Just what I needed.
To much consistency and no challenge in our lives can be really bad for us. Just unhealthy. We need to shake things up. To do anything else, well, is to fight against the way nature intended us to learn and grow.
We don’t build resilience by doing the same thing over and over again. I do believe that’s the definition of insanity. We do the same thing over and over again somehow expecting things to be different. Then get super escalated when they’re not any different.
Be contrary this week to what you’ve always done. Change it up. Build up some resilience with that very easy and very simple practice. I have the pleasure of several mentors in my life that continually tell me to “challenge everything!” I love how it pushes me to become the best version of myself I can be in those moments. Just about every time I do, I learn I can be so much more.
Enjoy Sunday. Think about where you are NOT being contrary to your everyday routines. Why is that? Could it be different? In that effort, what could it reveal about you if you did or didn’t practice being contrary to everything you’ve always done?
Love to hear how that is working out for you in the comments below. You never know, you could help someone else do the same.
✌ Shawn
