There’s “why” which is future thinking and there’s “what” which is now thinking. The eye of the hurricane is where we fight to be. Where it’s calm, still, and peaceful. Then, using the analogy of the storm around the eye, the raging chaos is where we spend most of time in. Finding the what or presence of mind is not easy to do in those moments.
“Be still and know.”
“Be still and know.”
Finding that place of stillness in the eye of the hurricane where we can see the blue sky and sun while everything else rages around us is where we need to be. It’s where we will find our what and understand where our pain, sadness, depression, or moment of clarity comes from.
In our focus to find intent in our work, our what is just as important as our why. You can find several authors that talk a lot about the why. Very few talk about the what. Mindfulness, the skill of being in your “what” is a key to making your “why” even possible. If we lose touch in the moment with ourselves, we lose touch with direction. We lose touch with our identity. We lose touch with the present to understand or course correct in real time.
When you focus on your “what” you find your purpose. There are very few things that you will find more fulfilling in your New Year’s goals or resolutions than having a strong sense of purpose. Finding a sense of purpose to greater academic success, job career advancement, and greater enjoyment in your personal life comes from our ability to internally listen to ourselves or be present with ourselves. It gives you an aim.
Things will pass us up if we’re not skilled in our ability to focus on what matters. To be fully present and really enjoy the work we set out to do is at times more fulfilling then actually getting there. The great news here, we all possess the ability to learn this skill of being in tune to our what. We naturally all have the ability to do so only if we practice staying in touch with our internal selves along the way.
Like the eye of the hurricane, when we are in harmony with our what in real time, we achieve a state of alertness and focused relaxation that will enable us to move so much better in the direction we want to go. Being in constant connection or communication with your what will improve your well-being, physical health, and mental health. It’s essential to achieving your 2019 goals!
Happy New Year my friends! I wish you all the best this year in personal development and success.
🙏🏻 Shawn
