It’s so easy for me to act and just dive in. I’m built with this natural curiously where I like to find out what makes something tick. What can make it better? Is there something I am missing that can make me better? Can I solve a problem? Like an an engineer I want to tear it apart to the basic components and rebuild what ever it is like an engine. The problem sometimes, it’s not necessary and can make things even worse.
Sometimes what’s better left unsaid or undone, is best. The way it is, is the best version of it. The beauty in how it works needs time to be able to bloom even when it looks like it’s doomed. Not everything or everyone needs to be fixed, to be made better. When you get put on blast by someone’s discontent, it sometimes is not a sign for you to fix them or the problem. It needs to play out. They want to be heard, not become a case study. The lesson, is not in reverse engineering. It’s recognizing what’s in front of you.
I believe we can be so quick to say what’s wrong without pause, we lose the opportunity to recognize the craft of someone or something’s intent. It loses it’s identity or truth, because we cannot sit still long enough, pause long enough, to see the whole action unfold.
Like the picture above, I don’t need to tear myself a part to become a better run or faster, I just need to pause on each medal’s story. What was it about the race that I really enjoyed? Pause. Wait. Pause some more. Think some more. No action needed. Just live in that thought for a while. I learned as I move into race season, this year, it’s not about winning or even figuring out why I lost, it’s pausing to enjoy the run whenever or wherever that is. Really be present in the pause. Enjoy it.
The challenge this week for me and you in my work or life work is to make sure we are not reacting emotionally, selfishly, or acting too soon with our thoughts. Pressure or not to perform, use our awareness to really understand as well as prepare for the best part of what that is in front of us. Your worst jobs, can become the best jobs by just changing your perspective. This is transferable to everything we do well or not. Changing perspective though, means we have wait, scale out. Be comfortable in the silence of not moving forward.
Have a great week! I’ll report back maybe by the end of this week on what I learned in the comments below. Feel free to do the same.
